Visible Monday: A Violet Valentine

You didn't really think I  was going to wear red for Valentine's Day, did you? photo 20130214_150015_zps6f004448.jpg

photo 20130214_150148_zpsadc7b49b.jpg Since I already had to go into downtown Nashville for some tests at Vanderbilt University Clinic my Mr and I decided to finally go to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts to see the Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age exhibit. We had planned to go to the opening a few weeks ago but, as it often does, life happened and we had to postpone.

Most of the pieces in this outfit aren't anywhere near new. The cap-sleeved, turtleneck sweater dress by rabbit rabbit rabbit petite is four years old and was purchased at Stein Mart . It's fairly heavy and happens to be my favorite shade of dark, lavendery violet. Likewise the Peck & Peack plum and grey reversible leather jacket was purchased during a big sale at Stein Mart. It's a lightweight leather that, I must confess, I've never worn on the grey side. The leopard Sugar boots are only a few months old from Shi by Journeys at Cool Springs Galleria. They are very comfortable and timelessly stylish but at 3" heel height are as high as I can go and still stand up. The Gracie Lynn butterfly sequined watch is also new from Stein Mart and is my nod to Nashville style. You'll never see me wear sequins in the traditional, Nashvillian sense, but I love to reference the city's glitzy tendency in select pieces of my wardrobe.

After the museum my sweetheart and I went to a romantic dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in West Nashville. I'll talk more about that in my next post which continues the "Passionate About" theme for February.

Thanks again to Patti at Not Dead Yet Style for the Visible Monday linkup.

I'll leave you with a picture of my Valentine's gift courtesy of The Frist Center's gift shop.

Fashion Friday: Sugar Coat-ed

Got the winter doldrums? Then cure them with a stroll in the park and a pop of color.

Winter wardrobes are all too often as dreary as the weather. The antidote is strategic use of color. Unlike last week's Fashion Friday, this week a little color goes a long way.

Start with the basics, black jeggings and a white cowl neck merino wool sweater. Both can be had very affordably from a multitude of places. The black microfleece gloves from dorothyperkins.com are only $5. The boots are Timberland Authentics Teddy fleece  fold-downs. They're warm and easy to walk in and list for $88 on zappos.com. The hobo bag is a black multi diamond stud for $40 from newlook.com.

Now for a little color. Who could resist this Planet Ruby Port pea coat in - what else - purple? It sells for $95 at johnlewis.com. How about a Hollister Co winter scarf in emerald, 2013's color of the year?  It'll set you back $30. Finally, the chevron crew socks from Target are only $8. You're all set to brave the elements in style with your Nova Cruiser Deluxe walker.

Fashion Friday: #23

If you read my last post, Out With The Old, I shared Regina Brett's 45 Lessons Life  Taught Me. I will now direct your attention to #23 on the list, "Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple."

How about if we swap "stylish" for "eccentric"?

New Year's Day was miserably cold and drizzly but I wanted to return a few things. Okay, exchange a few things is more accurate. At any rate,  I braved the cold and damp and ventured out.  It's not possible for me to negotiate an umbrella so good rain gear is a must. The hat is weather resistant acrylic/poly blend by Betman New York and the wide brim keeps the rain off my hair and glasses. The Vertigo plum trench is several years old. I had to have the sleeves altered to fit my petite proportions but because the coat only cost me $30 it was well worth the investment. I wear purple and blue together often so this Allison Brittney sweater dress was my first choice for today's chill. I bought it and the violet tights several years ago as well. It's always been difficult for me to find rain boots that fit properly and don't get snagged in the sides of my wheelchair. I had to go online to find these navy opaque Capelli mademoiselle booties complete with tassels but they were under $25 and are perfect for my circumstances.

I know most of you would never wear this much color but I got compliments on my outfit from no less than five total strangers. I'm not waiting, I'm wearing purple now!

I Got Presents!

I just thought I'd take a moment to share with you the lovely gifts I received for the holidays.

My wonderful friend Lani conspired with Matthew Perry Bretherick and got me this lovely pewter clutch with skulls detail from Shi. Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

My brother-in-law supplied the lovely purple paisley silk scarf. Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Mr Spashionista did a great job picking wonderful presents for me this year. Here's a stationary exercise peddler I've been wanting (yes, really). Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

I love this purple floral cover for my Note tablet. Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

He really outdid himself in the jewelry department. The bracelet features some of Alphonse Mucha's pieces depicted in charms. Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

If the necklace looks familiar it's because I already own a companion piece in amethyst. Like it's mate, the amber necklace is from 1902 and was made in Prague from Sworovski crystals. Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Later today we'll treat ourselves to a home-cooked steak dinner. It's supposed to snow tomorrow but we're already planning our after-Christmas shopping strategy.

How about you? Did you get what you wanted for the holidays?

Fashion Friday: Falling Leaves

Here in Middle Tn the leaves have just started turning colors from bright green to waxy shades of olive, brown, and rust. It's not quite fall but the temperature is approaching chilly and we're due for our first frost next week. I'm sure most of you can't wait to break out the fall wardrobe. I know I can't - so why wait?

I love the shape of this green asymetrical sweater dress. It's perfect for most body types and looks effortlessly chic. The equestrian look is a big trend this fall and that is reflected in the accessories. The boots are ECCO Hobart Buckle leather knee-high riders. ECCO shoes are expensive, these are $230, but are well made and comfortable which are serious considerations if you're on your feet a lot. My exercise walking shoes are ECCOs and I wouldn't have anything else. A violet infinity scarf adds a necklace effect without risking snagging the dress on an actual necklace. The messenger bag is in rich saffron suede which is one of this season's trendy colors. Top it off, literally, with a felt riding cap. This one is Ralph Lauren but I found one at Target for about 75% less than this one. All I have to do now is grab my green walker and  admire the falling leaves.
