Second Hand Rose

This week is dedicated to hands in general and second hands in particular. The second hands of time, the second chances for a hand in Orthopaedic Therapy, and "second-hand" in its most traditional sense.

I thought it would be fitting to visit Opry Mills Mall in an almost entirely thrifted outfit. Continuing with the theme of stepping out of my comfort zone I'm mixing patterns and sporting a Mandarin jacket to boot. It's a Member Ladies High Fashion (no, I've never heard of them either). I picked it up at Music City Thrift a few weeks ago and my husband thought it would look too "costumey", but I think I've proven him wrong. I paired it with this black and white mandarin collared tunic, also thrifted, no label. Both have a subtle floral pattern in approximately the same scale, which shouldn't work, but somehow does. The jeans are Nine West and also thrifted. They also happen to be my favorite pair.

The only items in the picture that aren't thrifted are the jewelry, which is from Stein Mart and my wonderfully talented friend Charisse, the argyle socks from Target, and the shoes. They seemed appropriate to the rest of the outfit and were purchased at Payless in the very same mall.

Sadly, the Mercedes I'm posing with is not mine. However, it does a good job of showing how short and petite I really am. I doubt my feet would reach the pedals. I can hardly wait for that thrilling moment when I start to shrink even further.

2013: Shop Smart, Stay Fit, Get Noticed, Be Fabulous

These are my personal resolutions for 2013.

Sick of the "r" word already? You'd be in good company. Statistics show that by January 20th 92% of us will have abandoned our lofty aspirations to settle for another year of disappointment.  The main reason being that most people set impossibly lofty goals for themselves, which does little more that sabotage any chance they may have of succeeding.

The goals I set for myself in 2013 are nothing more than a continuation of what I started in 2012. The only difference being I now have my readers to hold me accountable.

This year more than ever I'm going to be very choosy, and hopefully savvy, about what I buy. I did a little post-holiday shopping and managed to score several tanks and tunics at 60-80% off, including several in 2013's color of the year, emerald green.  I also found some great and distinctive looking summer converse lo-tops for 50% off.  I'll show you my purhases as the weather permits my wearing them. But my best find by far is pictured below.

When you see a sign that says, "Final, Final, Final Clearance" you don't just walk away from it! I got a pair of fisherman's cable ivory boot socks, two pairs of violet knee socks, and one pair of raspberry tights for $8. The tights are control top so I can work towards my "stay fit" resolution - which we'll talk about later this month - every time I put them on (which will be a 20 minute aerobic workout).

There is a world of difference between being resolute and being perfect. Perhaps this is why people give up on resolutions so easily. They either expect perfection from themselves or from the circumstances around them. I have news for you. You aren't perfect, and the road to seeing your resolutions through to fruition isn't, either. In the end it all comes down to what you're willing to do; your resolve to resolve your own problems. However, just because you have to do the heavy lifting doesn't mean you have to do it without a spotter. I'm committed to lending my support and encouragement to any of you that need it. All you have to do is ask.

What are you going to accomplish in 2013, and how can I help?

Fashion Friday: Nouveau Bohemian

Today I'm honoring my muse and hero Alphonse Mucha, who was a Bohemian in every sense of the word.

We often think of bohemians as a throwback to the hippie culture of the 60's but this is not the origin of the word. The term means "gypsy" in French and was originally used by the French to describe people from a certain region of Europe. Not only was Mucha born in Bohemia-Moravia, which is in the Czech Republic, he was also, "a person, as in an artist or writer, who lives and acts free of regard for conventional rules and practices".

What might a 21st Century Bohemian - a "Nouveau Bohemian" - wear?

How about a Bohemian tunic in charcoal from Pyramid Collection? Even though it's, "brocaded, brooched, beaded, and trimmed in front in a medley of design elements" it's more boho-chic than hippie-chick. Add some color with Lucky brand skinny jeans in ginger. If you get a chill throw on this FactoryExtreme red frill black leather jacket. If you're going to go overboard or literal - or both - the jewelry is the place to do it.  Start with an antique garnet bracelet, an onyx cuff from Natalie B Two, and Crissy's Bohemian style pink stone earrings. Slip your feet into your Dafo leg braces, tie on your Converse red suede hi-tops, and embrace your inner Nouveau-Boho-chic.

Fashion Friday: Summer Adventure

It's late July here in the US - and it's hot. Actually, that's an understatement. We've had an unusually hot summer so far. Just because it's hot doesn't mean you have to look sloppy or dress skimpily. Why not opt to look "cool" in every sense of the word?

The Carolina Prep blouson tunic top in aqua is airy yet sophisticated and looks terrific paired with the whimsical yellow cropped straight-legged jeans. The leather bag is a fairly demure mushroom with yellow accents and has both a handle and a shoulder strap depending on which method of carriage works best for you. Adding patterned espadrilles and a fun two-toned watch make the outfit youthful and you more approachable. If you are able to apply make up keep the palette neutral.

The crutch is a fashion statement in and of itself. You can find it and many others in terrific colors and patterns at Cool Crutches. Based out of the UK, I can personally vouch for the quality of their equipment. I own a pair myself and not only are they lighter in weight than generic crutches but, at $74.50 per crutch, I think they are a great value as well. If you need crutches get thee to this site immediately. Mine arrived within 48 hours of my internet purchase!
