Riverwood Mansion

This week finds me feeling unwell and shivering in the bleak, frigid January weather. Nevertheless, I'm excited to show off Riverwood Mansion, another of Nashville's historic homes.

Originally named Tammany Woods, this beautiful home was built in 1799 by Andrew Porter. A second, federal style structure was added in front of the original in 1820, along with a third story and Greek portico 30 years later. In 1859 it was purchased by Tennessee Supreme Court Judge William Frierson Cooper, who renamed it Riverwood because of it's proximity to the Cumberland River. Plumbing and electricity were installed; additions were made; guests were entertained. In fact, through the years this house has entertained seven presidents and countless others of great importance in their day.

These days Riverwood is a venue for weddings and parties. I  contacted the staff to inquire about wheelchair accessibility ahead of the upcoming Saints and Sinners party hosted by 12th and Broad and I was invited to tour the house and grounds. As you can see it's a lovely place, and the staff went out of their way to make me feel welcome. Even though it is exempt from being ADA compliant due to it's status as a historic home, a good deal of it is accessible. There is a ramp on the side of the building that leads to the main floor and there is a tented area for larger events that is accessible from the walkway. Sadly, the lift does not work and is so old they can't even order parts to repair it. Having said that, I'm happy to provide other Nashvillians with mobility issues with a frame of reference so they, too, can participate in events held at this venue.

Speaking of accessibility, I'm lending a hand to help establish a local group for people with disabilities whose initial focus will be on accessibility and transportation issues. More details on this soon.

The temperature stayed well below freezing that day so I bundled up in my Philosophy cashmere sweater from Nordstrom rack (what a find!) and leopard cape - which I'm sure you remember. That goes for the fur hat as well. It's a flea market find from last year. The only new-ish addition to this out are the Rock & Candy boots from Shi.
