Life at 57
Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.
While it is true that I haven't been blogging here on a regular basis it's not because I was slacking off; far from it. Fashion is for Every Body has taken off and, as a result, become very demanding of my time and physical resources. I think I've mentioned before how difficult and time-consuming typing is for me. My type of Cerebral Palsy really limits my fine motor skills and eventually causes neck and arm pain if I'm typing for hours at a time. Working out on a regular basis has helped to ameliorate that to an extent, but it'll never be eliminated. So I have to prioritize and that often means skipping the lengthy blog posts here. However, I do post more regularly on Spashionista's Instagram and I encourage you to follow me if you don't already and you want to see what you've been missing.
I was recently invited by Chico's, White House Black Market and Soma to celebrate their partnership with Habitat for Humanity at a party in their Green Hills store.
Shirt, bracelets and ring: Chico's
Trousers: White House Black Market
Bra: Soma
Shoes: Free People
Sunnies: Stash
Shirt, jewelry, trousers and lingerie were provided in exchange for attending the event.
I also got to work on an actual Habitat for Humanity house, too. It meant a lot to me to help put the finishing touches on someone else's hard earned, well deserved home. My house had to be gutted and rebuilt after the 2010 Nashville flood and it never would've happened without the help of many volunteers willing to lend a hand. You can watch a video of me painting door frames (exciting stuff, right?) on Instagram.
These photos were taken on the cusp of my 57th birthday. That number doesn't really make sense to me. My life experiences don't fit neatly into a box. The traditional milestones so many women my age look back on don't exist for me. In so many ways my life really didn't begin until I turned 50. But, as a woman with Cerebral Palsy, I'm acutely aware that my limitations are increasing and I don't know how long it'll be before I can't do simple things like typing. Sometimes it's hard not to laugh at the irony of that dichotomy.
In all honesty, I included the last picture because I couldn't think of any valid reason not to. There's no point in moving forward if I can't be a little (or a lot) rebellious in the process.
Here's to creating your own milestones. My hashtag for the year is #RebelRebel2018. What's yours?
